Hopi - Language

The way of thinking and speaking in the Hopi language is in a very impressive form different from neighbouring language families: The Hopi language knows no separation of space and time. Time plays no role for them, it does not exist in their language either, i.e. there is no word for time as an evenly flowing continuum. This phenomenon naturally has serious effects on daily life. For language reflects the way in which our consciousness experiences and interprets reality. With the Hopi, for example, there is a completely different sense of time than with us. Their time experience is not linear, but probably as a whole reality in cyclical movements.

The Hopi language does not contain words, grammatical forms, constructions or expressions directly related to what we call "time". It refers neither to the past, present or future, nor to duration or staying...

The real phenomena of this very extraordinary way of seeing the world and expressing it in language will certainly still have to be the subject of many activities, because just as the Hopi are able to protect their sacred places from curious eyes, so above all the importance of the Hopi language still lies a great veil.
